The televangelist was holding a meeting in a packed, sweltering auditorium. At the end of his sermon, he encouraged audience members to come forward, so that he could personally pray for their troubles and ailments.
A young man stood from his seat, and made his way to the aisle, wending his way down to the stage.
The evangelist asked, "What can I help you with, young man?"
"My hearing," came the response. "I want you to pray for my hearing."
The evangelist cried in a louder voice, "Yes, son, certainly!", and looking out to the audience, declared, "This man needs prayers for his hearing!"
He cupped his hands over the young man's ears, and fervently prayed, "This boy needs help with his hearing, and I am praying for his hearing. I am praying, I am praying over him now so that he receives the help he needs!"
The prayer ended, and the evangelist took his hands away from the ears and looked at the young man, eye-to-eye. He asked in a very quiet voice, "Did my prayers help your hearing?"
The young man replied in a whisper,
"I won't know until Thursday. That's when my hearing is scheduled."
